Pediatric Therapeutics

Pediatric acupuncture is a gentle and effective branch of Chinese Medicine that supports children’s health from infancy through adolescence. Unlike adult treatments, pediatric acupuncture often uses non-insertive techniques like Shonishin (a Japanese pediatric method) and Tui Na (a therapeutic form of massage), making sessions comfortable and approachable even for the youngest patients. Treatments may also include pediatric herbal medicine, nutritional guidance, and lifestyle recommendations tailored to each child’s constitution and condition.

Common concerns treated with pediatric acupuncture include digestive issues like colic, food stagnation, diarrhea, dehydration, and malnutrition, as well as respiratory conditions such as asthma, frequent colds, chronic cough, and lingering lung congestion—especially following repeated rounds of antibiotics. Skin conditions like eczema, behavioral challenges such as ADD, spectrum disorders, and autism, and concerns like enuresis (bedwetting), fever management, and musculoskeletal injuries (sprains and strains) are also commonly addressed with safe, natural methods rooted in thousands of years of holistic care.

Most importantly, pediatric acupuncture emphasizes preventative medicine. By supporting the child’s immune system, improving digestion, calming the nervous system, and nurturing overall wellness, acupuncture helps create a foundation for lifelong health. Whether your child is struggling with a specific condition or you’re simply seeking natural ways to enhance their vitality, pediatric Chinese medicine provides a gentle, individualized approach that empowers parents and promotes healing from the inside out.

What to expect

Each pediatric acupuncture session is tailored to the child’s age, temperament, and health needs. At the start of the visit, the practitioner will spend a few minutes connecting with the child and parent—reviewing symptoms, health history, and any recent changes. This helps build trust and ensures a holistic understanding of the child’s body and constitution through a Chinese & Natural Medicine lens.

Treatment begins with gentle, non-invasive techniques such as Tui Na (pediatric massage) and Shonishin—a soothing Japanese method using small tools to stimulate the body’s surface without puncturing the skin. These methods help regulate digestion, calm the nervous system, and support immune function. Depending on the child’s age and comfort, small press tacks or very fine needles may be used briefly—often just for a few seconds. Children are typically surprised by how painless and relaxing the process feels.

The session may also include recommendations for herbal medicine (if appropriate), simple dietary or lifestyle tips, and at-home techniques parents can use to support healing between visits. Throughout the 30-minute treatment, the focus remains on creating a calm, nurturing space where the child feels safe and seen—laying the groundwork for long-term wellness, naturally.
